This (temporary) blog is kept by Ninja Kors. Together with artists/teachers Horst Rickels, Elvira Wersche and Leo Delfgaauw she explores cross-arts practice, and how to acquaint students with it. This fascinating subject is made tangible with a pilot project on the island of Schiermonnikoog in May 2010.Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-25627553020166112452010-05-19T05:15:00.000-07:002010-05-19T05:21:37.484-07:00The Wad (an impression)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKV5dUXVN7jUP2QerB4Euj9bK_zLsvwYARfgfUbK2VKhMNsW7ywzf0HbWfmh93Ahv_ehPVQFV1nZ_EBSPiZB7y19KjI5FDWa0skWHKTsRJegCJPCa6z5zuR_sEi7wPg4MikLtjTBuD6To/s1600/2010-05-16+wad.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472953765204923298" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKV5dUXVN7jUP2QerB4Euj9bK_zLsvwYARfgfUbK2VKhMNsW7ywzf0HbWfmh93Ahv_ehPVQFV1nZ_EBSPiZB7y19KjI5FDWa0skWHKTsRJegCJPCa6z5zuR_sEi7wPg4MikLtjTBuD6To/s400/2010-05-16+wad.jpg" /></a><br /><div>It was cold on Sunday morning when Jos and Diego bravely ventured into the low-tide Waddenzee to dance and make markings in the mud - naked. Under leadership of Chad the students made a procession along the path down to the cemetery. Graphic notation was made unto banners by Sjuuls and Jimi. The banners served as 'inspirational scores' for musicians. While walking down together, Sjuuls would make small icons in the path where the procession would stop briefly to contemplate the transition from the transformed bunker to paying our respects to the unknown soldiers in Vredenhof.<br /><br /><em><span style="color:#ff0000;">Only brief impressions of each project will be published at this point. Not only to the students on how to deal with this place of death and contemplation, but also because the islanders were (understably!) protective of the respectfulness for Vredenhof. Eventually, with the kind permission of the Vredenhof Foundation, a short and simple ceremony was performed by five musicians in the group: three flutists, a singer, a cellist and a guitarist. They would address the graves of the unknown soldiers and give each of them a voice by means of a short musical theme. It was a beautiful moment, and one of the most profound experiences in the project.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;"><em>Only brief impressions of each project will be published at this point. The students threw themselves on making windmills with materials they found on the beach and dead branches from the surrounding bushes. The teachers and researchers stood wonderingly by as a lot of energy and focus was given to producing windmills of all shapes, sizes and materials. It completely transformed the fire station from a 'home base' into a workshop. Of course, this is what happens with laboratories: they are for trying things out.<br /><br /><br />As Horst Rickels would remark that evening and also the following day: sometimes this kind of creative stagnation is needed in order to contemplate where to go next. It was up to him and Elvira to make sure that the group would come back to their concepts of what to do on the island, and why, and how. A few main projects came out of the reflective talk on Friday morning:<br /><br /><br />1) <strong>The bunker</strong> - The bunker Wassermann was built on the highest point of the island during the second world war. It was never used for war purposes but still its inherent meaning was that of war, agression, suffering. The students wanted to change this.<br /><br /><br />2) <strong>Vredenhof</strong> - The peaceful cemetery near the bunker holds the graves of many (young) men who died during the first and second world war. Many of the graves do not have names on them but say something like '<em>inconnu</em>' or '<em>known unto God</em>'. The students thought it would be appropriate to give these men an identity somehow.<br /><br /><br />3) <strong>The path between the bunker and Vredenhof</strong> - How to connect those two places? The idea of a procession was forming.<br /><br /><br />4) <strong>The dunes</strong> - The natural environment of the island does not only provide many points of beauty but also acoustic opportunities. The dune bowl that was originally envisaged as a project location was abandoned because swallows were nesting there. A new location was found near the village. </p><p> </p><p>5) <strong>The Wad</strong> - From mud we are born and to mud we will return. This was the basic idea behind a short performance piece in the muddy Wad to the south of the island.</p>Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-49935320070249517132010-05-19T03:35:00.000-07:002010-05-19T04:03:06.009-07:00Ideas and concepts<span style="color:#ffffff;">While Thursday was a day for collecting impressions and the conception of early ideas, Friday would turn out to be a day of reflection and contemplation. In some shape or form.<br /><br />Every day Leo would start by making a short reflection on the previous day, linking the activities to examples and theories in the arts. Then the ideas of the previous day would be discussed further under the guidance of Horst and Elvira.</span><span style="color:#000000;"><br /></span><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472929430563984658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiordaNg6aazhnURbREBxIJtIwBoTIEDWXsfvIPBtfSRM6kAjrWGm94oCpupzOUEYIthDWmLs1_fX94KhyG_kLEbOa6FzbOJd0QJC_0FgJBJGDtfaFQgHbvXtyPCfhdLWZcCfFblk43sXg/s320/2010-05-14+reflection.jpg" /><br /><p>One clear idea coming from the preparation phase, was to make use of the bird sounds of the island. This is why on Friday morning some of the students went out into the nature park and recorded the sounds of the birds. They were 'translated' into graphic representations by Sjuuls Oonk, a student of Minerva Academy, and in turn served as inspirations for musicians. At this stage it was still not quite clear how the bird song would be used later in the project.</p><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472929439335830866" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix1tKhE1txrg4yJryhXVGKscQewjPj-lNusOX_2SDnoFcQhNZtLB7UZaBY1cA8fslPWDoxaw5v7jODGMiiFQUoOB-P14aFN0WbthMXF9XUbkYhIBNxGNnkz7rBhhyAfIPU_OIpXVXTTtU/s320/2010-05-14+bird+sounds+notation.jpg" /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cfhE3kuGepyrw4IvL6IUG4wFMx09zGClaanlb8tcjcW3ITXUT1iVhnVaMT7bAo3EG2gX6jS2W_DL6WCNW_3X6FOxKyNxWfDUvOo5FmKCW4AwOQcgFUnXUNyoMOXGAuqFHDNfioFpcWU/s1600/2010-05-14+bird+sounds.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472929431438648626" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cfhE3kuGepyrw4IvL6IUG4wFMx09zGClaanlb8tcjcW3ITXUT1iVhnVaMT7bAo3EG2gX6jS2W_DL6WCNW_3X6FOxKyNxWfDUvOo5FmKCW4AwOQcgFUnXUNyoMOXGAuqFHDNfioFpcWU/s320/2010-05-14+bird+sounds.jpg" /></a></p><p>Another idea that prevaled at this stage, was the idea of working with windmills...</p>Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-34312136994983568892010-05-19T03:21:00.000-07:002010-05-19T03:34:31.077-07:00Thursday May 13, part II<div><div align="left"><em><span style="color:#990000;">!!! - Pl</span><span style="color:#990000;">ease note that for now a preliminary (image) report will be given, with comments to clarify the meaning of the pictures. </span></em><em><span style="color:#990000;">A full in-depth report about the process during the project will be available at a later stage.</span></em></div><br /><div></div><div>A few excursions were planned at the beginning of the week in order to acquaint the students with the island and some of the people who live there. Around them the birds were waking up and making themselves heard, and the rising of the sun caused the landscape to display a variation of colours and textures. (However, since yours truly was not there, there are no pictures to publish at this time.)<br /><br />After breakfast at the fire station, a new trip was undertaken. Various locations that were explored during the preparatory meetings were now visited: the dunes, the bunker from WWII, and the Vredenhof cemetery.<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470696673488845906" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaRofQn9cTRNtXBZzAqJPCk1rv4Unu1E7yk0nqP3kIaCV-hxjEEinXgenwyjhhcfTAr-XvRwHvyr1csQjiey8Ah2iy_Q2zHUWE_t87HW8cQWuKQ5ZhGao8CWzHLr4BwPT8sewI_5JH81Q/s320/P1010502.JPG" /> <div align="center"><em>At the edge of a natural amphitheatre in the dunes.</em></div><div align="center"><em></em> </div><div align="center"> </div><div align="center"><em></em></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIIlz0aH-joxGFVRyctZfU2hM1-q0DpS-spxUeDtxoD4q7cJGMqtp8tFNx-mp1JkCATTirctvY4gn1PAaanePBzLniNMiOJ4Y93vnjwJmmQyFhSsWyoSTB7uxDJWpNRdeBeobhPg_-5X8/s1600/P1010516.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470697395241010402" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIIlz0aH-joxGFVRyctZfU2hM1-q0DpS-spxUeDtxoD4q7cJGMqtp8tFNx-mp1JkCATTirctvY4gn1PAaanePBzLniNMiOJ4Y93vnjwJmmQyFhSsWyoSTB7uxDJWpNRdeBeobhPg_-5X8/s320/P1010516.JPG" /></a><em>Peeping Jimi at the bunker</em> </div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qA82HbkhZNOQ2zeankLTJaxcCUXKJ2XP2ejtUdblJah4eS2xELubXdoFTxMbRVav0FlaiAx_kFXKkux5iqkqhFh3e5K3kqm8N05azdW9Mqfyzvz3XttXpeFAGzlONEh8KLlmVtFAouA/s1600/P1010518.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 180px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470697385497702642" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qA82HbkhZNOQ2zeankLTJaxcCUXKJ2XP2ejtUdblJah4eS2xELubXdoFTxMbRVav0FlaiAx_kFXKkux5iqkqhFh3e5K3kqm8N05azdW9Mqfyzvz3XttXpeFAGzlONEh8KLlmVtFAouA/s320/P1010518.JPG" /></a> <em>Chad explores the xylophone possibilities of the bunker, exploring new ways to produce musical sounds on a concrete structure.</em><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjj9AUZZMb5btL-4grbYvVTgMuII6wARK2gf4rRtp5GrILp0s8nVbF1OERmzjSYNDmXbGmZi6S8ZsPqJmNuN9ch-QSZAGRgOfArPCfevkWU3bsAq41iU6ZSRIhGHCY4DnvwtqMIDsg_5M/s1600/P1010523.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470697375009882066" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjj9AUZZMb5btL-4grbYvVTgMuII6wARK2gf4rRtp5GrILp0s8nVbF1OERmzjSYNDmXbGmZi6S8ZsPqJmNuN9ch-QSZAGRgOfArPCfevkWU3bsAq41iU6ZSRIhGHCY4DnvwtqMIDsg_5M/s320/P1010523.JPG" /></a> <em>Respectful discovery of the Vredenhof cemetery.</em><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVTesrcEJ8oxFnUIpDYEy78AzJ0zPI7shtm12kYyGrw5vCL7ASdVhAj1lAYCXMIfAebB7Qza-FyJ-fzkv4n8BfSQiHftIBwd_bjCNLtUcTIdRbJdJPVJfTByEt8du3VdAVxNy8cyKyJdM/s1600/P1010525.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470697369553110082" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVTesrcEJ8oxFnUIpDYEy78AzJ0zPI7shtm12kYyGrw5vCL7ASdVhAj1lAYCXMIfAebB7Qza-FyJ-fzkv4n8BfSQiHftIBwd_bjCNLtUcTIdRbJdJPVJfTByEt8du3VdAVxNy8cyKyJdM/s320/P1010525.JPG" /></a><em>Diego photographs Vredenhof. Part of the ensemble took the afternoon boat where they busied themselves with grocery shopping, picking up the rental bikes, and getting the fire station ready for use. The rest of us took the evening boat at 5.30. There was a tiny spot of rain but nothing serious. Let's hope it stays that way!<br /><br />In the evening, we started with a very pleasant meal at Hotel van der Werff. (The kitchen staff really cater to everyone, and prefer to do so at late notice!) At the end of the meal, Horst announced the plans for Thursday:<br />The day was to start at 4 o'clock in the morning...<br /><br />This caused a brief shock among the participants but it was quickly turned into enthusiasm and fascination when it turned out that they were going for an early morning exploration, watching the sun come up together and experiencing the waking of the island.</div><div> </div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 240px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470694149427132658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX8NtyZqJDOI8fXmVjPWdTm8H0woRgreme92dk4xCCbeGXropsErTlLIn50UHPPe4uglT6VN7w_CeuJzkwdsykcfRq2Hzbz7EZG3TRAgmF8B1LEDbRysJfxIeX8_32zLnnqxbpqrjgOyQ/s320/P1010496.JPG" />Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-42164350908134724482010-05-11T03:17:00.000-07:002010-05-11T03:23:06.042-07:00Weather forecastThursday 13 until Sunday 17 May<br /><br /><em>Wolkenvelden, af en toe een bui en vrij koel. Out of it came the framework of 'creating a new culture' on Schiermonnikoog, that has no folklore of its own.<br /><br />A culture like this would be based on four themes:<br />- The workings of the tides.<br />- Nature, notably the birds.<br />- Life & Death, central in any culture.<br />- Past & Present, how do people deal now with what has happened before.<br /><br />The students split up into four small working groups to think out ways of approaching these themes, maybe bringing in some of the ideas that were wrought before and perhaps introducing new ones. The results were presented by the students themselves.<br /><br />The videos are big to up- and download so a little patience is required. Please note that these are preliminary results from free brainstorms. This means that they are by no means worked-out project plans for the upcoming project work on Schiermonnikoog. Plans may (and probably will) transform greatly once we get to the island and students get to working on the actual location!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41WU0PMTCiQ">Bram, René & Janneke</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_a3a5PfyIVg">Diego & Sjuuls</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHkGqvQ7LEk">Jon Gunnar & Jos</a> <br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV4AciLtQAw">Jimi, Maaike & Chiel</a>Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-88103547129737252382010-05-04T02:59:00.000-07:002010-05-04T03:00:51.211-07:00Langs de vloedlijnC.O. In turn, the students were asked to develop some first ideas about what, why and how to do things on Schiermonnikoog in May. These ideas will be brought to the final preparatory meeting in April where we will try some of them hands-on in one of the studios in The Hague.<br /><br />At the end of the meeting the students received yet another assignment. Elvira Wersche gave them three short sticks from her own garden. The students are to discover the possibilities and meanings inherent in the sticks: past, present and future. Just like an egg, she explained, everything has more and deeper layers than can be observed at first sight. One may consider an egg as an oval calcium structure, or as a potential for new life. It is perception shifts like these that enable an artist to make connections and meanings that transcend sound or image - and that bring together the various arts disciplines.<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449573013932856114" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ4kkjvUaoDpTUVQoSZ39d5VHvh2XT78JpRH6aKXzEdXoDujWfPyO2ccSZhXHN8pmuJalaXg74ea7mDjsX39R_2rSoHZk2JbWobjbDFlBWs4X0tIqa8FRUo3634NbTBdUdQlECFYUbW5E/s400/P1010329.JPG" />Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-69783709521200067212009-12-29T01:30:00.000-08:002009-12-29T02:05:42.116-08:00Schiermonnikoog! Rineke our guide set a course for us and we set out to explore: West and East, North and South.<br />Light and dark.<br />Concrete and sand.<br />Life and death. It’s all there.<br /><br />There is an old bunker in the middle of the island. It was built by German forces during the second world war to establish a communication hub by means of a 40 metres high antenna. The device never made It there, probably because of sabotage. The bunker is still there, a grey concrete beetle sitting at a strategic high point. It now offers unrivalled views of the island and the surrounding waters.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjuRQk_L0oEbY_xlI1z2ZGyMWj5P_X5HMca1-i_AQA0bdSTraaoenDS0jxjCc2d1DusLVfhMWbh56tK5G7RmkXlQ8Dfbggf7FGRm3zCELWJoMPK1ekUg3pkYJZfmJUb01CAF5ETuZMFE/s1600-h/2009-12-29+2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 150px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420596205013407122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizjuRQk_L0oEbY_xlI1z2ZGyMWj5P_X5HMca1-i_AQA0bdSTraaoenDS0jxjCc2d1DusLVfhMWbh56tK5G7RmkXlQ8Dfbggf7FGRm3zCELWJoMPK1ekUg3pkYJZfmJUb01CAF5ETuZMFE/s200/2009-12-29+2.jpg" /></a><br />That is all very well and for explorers like us, band of cross-arts scouts, it is always good to survey the surroundings, but common wisdom dictates that the treasure lies within. We found the entrance to the bunker and roamed around in its small chambers, marvelling at the way that a little light found its way in and the sounds of the spaces and materials within. A boy’s adventure book come true! </p><br /><div align="left">More stuff for the imagination was found not far from the bunker. There is a small graveyard there for people (mostly men) washed up on Schiermonnikoog’s shores. Some are very old graves from the early twentieth century when identification of bodies was not so advanced as it is now. Most of the graves however are from the wars.<br /><br />Shipwrecked anonymous men lie side by side with unknown soldiers from European nations like England, Germany, France, Poland. Not all are unnamed and plaques show the deaths of young men: some made it to their thirties but so many did not. Twenty-three, twenty, as young as eighteen years old they were shot down in their planes and their remains made it to this beautiful tranquil place on this strange island. Brushing aside the snow from the plaques it made me realise all the things that these young men, boys, had never known.<br /><br />We biked to the beach, with snowy sand and sandy snow. We biked through the dunes to where the ‘kwelders’ begin, a beautiful watery ecosystem that stretches as far as the eye can see. We biked along the ‘Waddenzee’ to the southern tip of the island and watched the ferry landing place in the distance. (The following morning the snow decided to take things seriously and positively flood the north of the Netherlands. We were lucky to get home. The views, however, were beautiful as we made a last stop before departure, at the little catholic church on the island.) </div><br /><div align="left"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCiyudRjgd7HGxybDxbUic4nXJpwUsvtMeVIs9KDl-S-ngtupS7vwfK6LxUxomJqCr-62cn-KAef4ytJOPAnwNSjtjXwmQvqRM-g_3065OUURwwqbH5CTfrB-OMG6Vr3CM4pq1VoLnVm0/s1600-h/2009-12-29+4.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 189px; HEIGHT: 138px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420595132324174658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCiyudRjgd7HGxybDxbUic4nXJpwUsvtMeVIs9KDl-S-ngtupS7vwfK6LxUxomJqCr-62cn-KAef4ytJOPAnwNSjtjXwmQvqRM-g_3065OUURwwqbH5CTfrB-OMG6Vr3CM4pq1VoLnVm0/s200/2009-12-29+4.jpg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwBqJv35Oion3kK9zD61HlHAfCYkOqMUtkph2GOqarlNL-df7QFLVc2Nbnwfm3GlYYTt0oRMyzPSOsUmKeEGIG8_1KZr-bPpSKEpYyVDQqIb33dEQeloA9jCCU9PpgGYfqvplXUXr6PhY/s1600-h/2009-12-29+3.jpg"><img style="WIDTH: 195px; HEIGHT: 138px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420595234929047682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwBqJv35Oion3kK9zD61HlHAfCYkOqMUtkph2GOqarlNL-df7QFLVc2Nbnwfm3GlYYTt0oRMyzPSOsUmKeEGIG8_1KZr-bPpSKEpYyVDQqIb33dEQeloA9jCCU9PpgGYfqvplXUXr6PhY/s200/2009-12-29+3.jpg" /></a><br /></div><br /><div align="left">Above all, we biked our hearts and souls around this beautiful place between the land and the sea and little bubbles of inspiration and imagination were constantly renewed. This week we (<a href="http://www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org/BeheerContentPagina.asp?id=23#KorsUK">me</a>, <a href="http://www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org/BeheerContentPagina.asp?id=119">Rineke</a>, <a href="http://www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org/BeheerContentPagina.asp?id=367">Horst, Elvira</a>) visited this beautiful place to scout for places that could play a role in the project in May. I had never been to the island but I had heard a great deal about it. However, being from the west of the country and no stranger to beaches myself, I did have a mental image of what I supposed it would be: sea culture, seagulls, fisherman culture, sand. </div><div></div><br /><div>It turned out to be different but that was no fault of the island itself; it was due to the weather. We had snow!<br /><br />This week was the first really wintery week of the year in the Netherlands. And the winter hit strongest in the North of the country: in the area of Groningen, Friesland, and therefore also Schiermonnikoog. It started to snow just before we got on board of the ferry to take us across the Waddenzee. It was still snowing when we got off on the other side. The landscape was covered in white powdery snow, bringing with it that magical quality that only snow can bring.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPJIBCEPIphKO3uEAxMyvUGKM0IRYu_KwJtsix0CLtX9IWysfcP-TWpVz6j_go9y4lkhq7PfzH3gyMOFDsgncKruAA6i-xBWQER77tUhijIxUQotEM_r5B9s0fDt5RtdTyMs8yY6Ok6wU/s1600-h/crossblog2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 97px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 116px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416562779405963922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPJIBCEPIphKO3uEAxMyvUGKM0IRYu_KwJtsix0CLtX9IWysfcP-TWpVz6j_go9y4lkhq7PfzH3gyMOFDsgncKruAA6i-xBWQER77tUhijIxUQotEM_r5B9s0fDt5RtdTyMs8yY6Ok6wU/s200/crossblog2.jpg" /></a>The day started with an appointment to see the old fire station. This building is no longer in use for this purpose. It is now envisaged as part of a beautiful cultural centre that is planned to open in 2011, linking several existing buildings as well as new structures. As it is now, the fire station is only in use occasionally by islanders preparing for, for example, the <a href="http://www.schiermonnikoogmidwinter.nl/">midwinter festival</a>.<br /><br />The fire station was wonderful! It is exactly what we would need for the project: it has a large central space that opens up (by means of those typical garage doors) to the village. It has separate rooms for students and groups to work in. It has sanitary facilities and it has even a kitchen! It is absolutely perfect. Hopefully we will be able to use it in May.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCAUMZ9VZzShJ8xj5KbA0OKm5DRGR68OZYFCmgB2FTrgA_8ViaH6Acg4lfG7zKUShdfC8OXfLt7BKDguNdaeMtaklx1-TdXLhihXeBz_j6kAoZfFhurez5-pgM6TkI4KnB9HTr1t02Thc/s1600-h/crossblog3.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 200px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416561871572751522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCAUMZ9VZzShJ8xj5KbA0OKm5DRGR68OZYFCmgB2FTrgA_8ViaH6Acg4lfG7zKUShdfC8OXfLt7BKDguNdaeMtaklx1-TdXLhihXeBz_j6kAoZfFhurez5-pgM6TkI4KnB9HTr1t02Thc/s200/crossblog3.jpg" /></a><br />(In the floor of the main space there is a pit, for greasing the engines and boat maintenance. Horst couldn’t control himself: he had to get in. So here he is.)<br /><br />With Rineke as our guide we walked past the lighthouse and to the dunes to find a natural sandy amphitheatre. With the snow on the dunes and the grey skies around us it was beautiful. The sea can be heard all the time, a soft roar at the edge of hearing that reminds me city dweller of a motorway. Yet the sound of the sea is different; it has a depth and continuity to it that car tires just cannot manage.<br /><br />The nice thing about being in an inspiring place, especially with artists like Horst and Elvira, is that upon seeing something like that sandy dune amphitheatre one immediately sees a multitude of possibilities for using that space for artistic work. We could see Horst thinking about the acoustic possibilities of the high edges, while Elvira took photos of the textures and materials around. On the way back to the village, the ideas and philosophies were already flying back and forth. And this was only before lunch… </div><div> </div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416563174331340002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuKKQMjD5Mp4MagOrLiZU0eEqSnZOmWKQTlr4cyj3GaLX79Jxc3ou6K0Yhsuo7ZCxVYxqyBoYrRStiGapF4FRmxOCqWtVv5o1W3uOTM8VKnXoqFYjPME0AonqOPNCqll5i_BBuG8eu6BY/s320/crossblog4.jpg" /> <div>(More about our visit to Schiermonnikoog soon!)</div></div></div></div></div></div></div>Ninja Korshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00733054181581919255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082441664167126368.post-73200573631481042902009-11-30T01:45:00.000-08:002009-12-02T07:12:22.094-08:00Cross-arts?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4FW720I2SLEJrkXltVQ59ie1vCfA33R2Ddh8uAk9Tb-eea2cSs0h9pq6b-bZlU9oOLJ3sswwJB6hOZNViMde_PFBnfREREpn13p9mIf_iVZamMWE7NJecnU9RsrJWVjPn6pfAu1DO0Ck/s1600/P1000659klein.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px; display: block; height: 240px;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5409831049622356770" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4FW720I2SLEJrkXltVQ59ie1vCfA33R2Ddh8uAk9Tb-eea2cSs0h9pq6b-bZlU9oOLJ3sswwJB6hOZNViMde_PFBnfREREpn13p9mIf_iVZamMWE7NJecnU9RsrJWVjPn6pfAu1DO0Ck/s320/P1000659klein.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />Rineke Smilde, lector Lifelong Learning in Music and the Arts (<a href="http://www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org/">www.lifelonglearninginmusic.org</a>), has asked me to dive into cross-arts work. Not on my own but together with artist Horst Rickels. This is just as well because he is very experienced in this field – and I am not. At all. I enjoy being surprised and delighted by works of arts, and I enjoy the high level of ‘experiencing’ that Horst includes in a lot of his work: sound, movement, use of space. His works seem very tangible to me and I like that.<br /><br />However, other than enjoy his work, I can’t say that I fully understand it. Nor do I know how it came into being. Not yet! Now Horst and I are undertaking an endeavour to explore what some of the elements (or factors, or circumstances, or…) are that make cross-arts practice both fascinating and useful for every kind of artist to experience.<br /><br />One of the reasons we are doing this is because as we go we will be developing a cross-arts laboratory for young artists(-to-be): students of music and visual arts. The framework for the lab has already been set in time: preparations have started for an intensive in May with around fourteen students and three artists/coaches/guides.<br /><br />And me.<br /><br />My primary job is to coordinate, observe, interview. However, I fully intend to this take opportunity to find some ways to ‘see different things or see things differently’, as Horst describes one of the key elements of cross-arts practice and being an artist in the world. While I am neither artist nor musician, I am very much in this world! I don’t sing or compose about it, or paint or make installations: I write.<br /><br />Rule #1 for any author: write what you know.<br />I want to know more.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:78%;"><em>Photo: people looking into <strong>Bikinibar</strong> by Joep van Lieshout.
